Unity of Tustin is a very unique spiritual community that is poised to serve its community, the surrounding community, and yes, the world. Not many places in the world provide access and support to so many practical and powerful practices that raise consciousness and provide the means to change the world. Unity of Tustin does this on a campus that can support many small groups, providing many paths of transformation.
The Board of Directors is feeling the call for Unity of Tustin to step into something greater than we already are. A person visiting Unity of Tustin for the first time came to the Sabbatical Forum on May 28 and noted that he “Sees the Light that you cannot deny.”
You are the world’s light—a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light! Let it shine for all; let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise your heavenly Father. —Matthew 5: 14-15
As you read the Matthew quote, notice what comes up in you regarding Unity of Tustin. Then notice what comes up for you personally as it relates to Unity of Tustin and your everyday life. The Board is excited about the shift we feel coming for Unity of Tustin to be the ‘city on the hill’ and looks forward to the community engaging as an integral part of that.
Unbeknownst to the Sabbatical Team, including Rev. Carolyne, the Board, and other key leaders, Rev. Carolyne’s sabbatical has developed into an opportunity for our entire community to reflect and renew. As Rev. Carolyne is away, the community will be functioning differently, with staff, Board, and community members fulfilling functions that Rev. Carolyne typically does. This covers the gamut, including higher-level bookkeeping, audio/visual support, teaching, prayer consciousness holder, IT support, etc.
Now God gives us many kinds of special abilities, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service to God…The Holy Spirit displays God’s power through each of us as a means of helping the entire church. —I Corinthians 12: 4-7
As I Corinthians reminds us, we all have many unique gifts that have been gifted to us by the Holy Spirit for use in supporting each other. What are yours? And how might you be a beacon on a hill?
So God has put the body together in such a way that extra honor and care are given to those parts that might otherwise seem less important. This makes for happiness among the parts, so that the parts have the same care for each other that they do for themselves. If one part suffers, all parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad…All of you together are the one body of Christ and each one of you is a separate and a necessary part of it.
—I Corinthians 12: 24-27
All parts are important and we rise and fall together. Did you notice that we are all a necessary part of the whole? Notice how we are reminded that we are one body and that we hold each other through all experiences. We are all here at Unity of Tustin, now, for a reason. We may not know the reason, and the mystery is OK. We are invited to renew our relationship to ourselves, our families, and to our community at Unity of Tustin.
Christian mystics, wisdom-holders about the evolutionary impulse, and other mystics are converging on an awareness that our future as individuals, spiritual communities, our country, and the world rely on we humans coming together to consciously co-create, with Spirit, a better world. Unity of Tustin is poised to step into this awareness in a big way. Please join us this summer as we become more powerful as individuals, grow together, support each other, and love the world.
We have already had the opportunity to join Dr. Marj Britt in June at her four-day intensive, “A Summons to Love,” for insights into the spiritual significance of the meditation gardens and the depths of experiencing mystical life.
Here are some additional ways we will be moving together:
- Join us at the Heartbeat of the Community on July 16 to give feedback to the Board on Unity of Tustin’s path forward and to hear perspectives from the Board. Hear what action steps are planned based on the survey taken in the spring about the Sunday morning experience and express your ideas and responses. Remember, we are all important!
- Celebrate our community on July 23 at our Annual Summer Picnic. And this year we will have the added experience of the Ministry Fair, highlighting all the incredible ministries at Unity of Tustin. We are one and service is a great way to shine our light.
- Celebrate our past, acknowledge our present, and co-create our future through structured activities which are in the process of being created. This time of self-reflection will reveal and prepare us for what Spirit is bringing our way, allowing us to surrender all the while highlighting our value.
- So that Adventure in Faith is created for and by the community as a reflection of what we have discerned this summer you are invited into the process of planning and delivering our 2017 AIF experience. Stay involved to determine how to participate, because Everything Belongs (our book this year will be Everything Belongs by Fr. Richard Rohr).
While all of this is occurring, the normal life of our community will continue. Even as we know how plans make God laugh, we have planned well. The Board will be guiding these processes, keeping in communication with the community, and working on projects that are in lockstep with the community’s reflection process.
As Marianne Williamson famously said, “We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.” Join us in your unique and perfect way.
Be the Beacon!
